Blogger Migration Tool

admin — March 19, 2010 - 12:27

For those of you who have blogs published through FTP,you might have noticed the following message incorporated by google when you logged into blogger.

"FTP publishing will no longer be available after May 1, 2010 .You currently have blogs that are published using FTP. You must migrate your blogs to a new custom domain URL or a blogspot URL. To learn more, see our dedicated blog and help documentation."

One of our blogs was being published through FTP and we had noticed this message for quite some time while logged in blogger. We were in a dilemma whether to proceed with the migration or not considering the consequences involved in this. Eventually we had decided to proceed with the migration after going through the video at blogger-ftp.blogspot.com/2010/03/ftp-migration-tool-released.html.With the help of this video, we were able to perform the migration successfully ,by choosing the custom domain URL.

The video regarding the blogger migration tool was clear enough and we had to refer to this URL google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=47283 for adding the CNAME to the DNS for our domain name registrar. So migration as such was not a difficult task.

But once the migration was performed we’ve noticed a couple of issues especially from the SEO point of view:

  • A blog content which was posted(after migration) is not yet crawled even after 3 days.Usually our blog postings get crawled minutes after we post the content. This is quite a drawback.
  • Our blog page rank was 1 before migration ,but after migration our blog doesn’t seem to have a page rank.Wonder when the PR will get updated or will it happen in the next PR update which is likely to happen by March end or april 1st week.
  • Also our blog contents were displayed on the home page through RSS .This code had to be changed entirely after the migration. We are still working on the changes in this code.
  • We had created a sitemap for our blog. The code was based on fetching details from FTP. But since after migration the blogger contents wouldn’t be available through FTP,we need to write a code from scratch.

Have you performed migration for any of your blogs?Did you face any similar or other issues while migrating?Any comments on the above issues we are facing? It would be great to hear from you.

Also if you know of any active discussion currently running in forums regarding the migration tool, kindly let us know so we could check it out.
