Is It Good For SEO To Buy Domain With Keyword For Secondary Website

admin — January 18, 2011 - 10:19

To have a keyword in your domain name will help it rank better in SERPs is a common belief and we can find results to be of the same trend for a majority of times.  Given the importance of domain name, here we come across a discussion about purchase of a domain name and how to use it as a secondary website.

Drelly seems to be in a spot of bother and says:

He can buy a domain “<mytown>webdesign”, but it has no back links. It would really be of use to him if he uses it as his primary website but he doesn’t want to change the url of his primary website. He also thought of setting it up as his secondary website but doesn’t want to get penalized for using it as a doorway page. So he is planning to make it a ‘stand alone’ site. Will it be worth?

Lsindo feels:

By making the secondary URL as a supporting blog or website to the primary URL, he can generate a lot of traffic

Jsteele823 feels:

Setting that up as a 3 page site without linking to the main site, linking to some common directory sites and concentrating on developing the main site will help a lot.

Distinctseo says:

It can be a possibility that one gets indirect seo benefits by having such a domain name but in the end it is just a keyword in the domain name.

Domains are all about brand, and an established brand can never be trumped by a keyword rich domain. So if one has a website doing well for the brand name then he can stick on with it instead of purchasing a keyword rich domain to boost rankings. Also it will be a waste of time to put up duplicate contents and effort on the site.

He sums up saying one can buy a domain name to protect his brand if necessary.

KernelPanic feels:

That there are many issues that should be seen before purchasing the domain like getting a boost from the domain, purpose of it, traffic, brand and much more.

Egol feels:

Building a secondary website can be a waste of time unless the primary website has top rankings for the primary keywords. As content you put up in the primary website will any day have more authority and popularity then the same content on a secondary website.

Focusing on developing the primary website will help a lot and once it ranks well for the long tail, then one can consider developing a secondary website.

If it is the killer domain then buying it and redirecting to the main site will help.

The whole point is it will always be of help if you buy a domain name with a keyword, but it is unnecessary if you have established a brand name for your site, so various permutations and combinations of the keyword you rank for are going to be available in various domain names.

Getting the domain name if it is the domain to go for will be advisable. Also concentrating on building and developing the primary website and just making small changes for the secondary website will be advisable. As you can ensure you don’t waste a lot of time on the secondary website and as time goes on seeing the response for the secondary site, make any improvements if necessary.
